Lesson Two
The rediscovery of the Shang began with the discovery of oracle bones which are inscribed shells. Inscriptions were about events of natural significance, natural disasters, as well as insignificant happenings. They were the first written texts and recorded the history of Shang. To prove their existence, there were reference to historical personalities and it dispelled some misconceptions of Shang. Legend had it that Wang Yirong’s family bought the shells to make medicine. Wang Yirong, an archaeologist was the first to build up a collection of oracle bones. Shang fortune tellers foretold predictions about the future, then used the oracle bones to find out whether the event would occur. The bones were cleaned and thinned. A hot object was applied until the surface cracked. The cracked shells or bones were then presented to the king. The king’s interpretation of the cracks was subsequently engraved into the shell together with the original prediction. (141 words)

Reality television summary
Reality television, dominating the tube right now, is about the real antics of real people in real environments. It shows people getting insulted and humiliated. Reality television is also cheap to produce and profitable. It is like sport. However, a misnomer of reality shows is that key moments are obviously staged and unreal. Even so, reality shows are popular with viewers. It can erase the boundaries between the public and private as it promotes themes that the audience can identify with. It is also unpredictable and is a new way of telling a story. Reality shows will always have a place on television; however, future prospects are dim. Producers will likely run out of ideas and viewers will get bored. If not, reality television will also face competition from other forms of programming. (123 words)

The scorching heat made me swallow in agony. I groped blindly for the door, enriched with the single thought of making it out alive. Relived, I twisted the handle and stumbled forward, to be comforted with the blast of air. Outside, I was only aware of strong arms enfolding around me, before the world went blank.
My head felt heavy with dizziness. The scent of the air smelled different. It took a minute before I realised I wasn’t in the comfort of my house. Adjusting my eyes to the sudden brightness, I saw that my hand and body were injected with tubes.
“Hi, Miss Lee. How are you feeling?” A nurse sporting a bright smile questioned.
“A little groggy,” I managed to answer, “but what exactly happened?” I prompted her, anticipating the answer.
She answered with a slight frown, “Apparently, the fire that broke out in your workplace was due to insufficient safety measures taken. Not to worry though, the police are looking into it.”
After a few more prompts, it turns out a large number of people were injured as a result of the fire. Thankfully, everyone was rescued in time and are now recuperating in hospital.
A few days later, the company endorsed new polices to enhance their safety measures in order to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Dear Mrs Menon,
I am Soh Huimin, a pupil in one of the graduating classes. I am honoured to be able to give you feedback regarding the facility that i think will be the most suitable. The main objective of this building this facility is to encourage links between the school and the local community and to allow them to share their skills and interests. Thus, i feel that the multi-purpose sports hall will be able to fulfill the objectives needed.
In terms of size, i feel that the multi-purpose hall will be best suited to accomodate more people. Also, the various types of equipment and facilities will give the students and members of the public space for interaction, as it could be open after school hours and during weekends. They will be able to share their skills and common interests, which will encourage links between the school and the local community.
All of the three facilities can be used by the community, however the theatre and concert hall will be more suitable for drama groups and musicians rather than the other students and the older members of the community.
A multi-media resource centre, on the other hand, will be able to provide IT opportunities for the young and old. However, it would not a good choice as there are limited facilities and will only be open for a limited amount of time for the students and members of the community to fully make use of it.
In conclusion, I sincerly hope that you would consider the multi-purpose hall that i have suggested. Thank you.

3x Programme
Here's our picture,

What are the two boys doing in this picture?
The two boys are damaging a water-cooler by kicking it causing a bent. They seemed to be enjoying themselves even though it is against the school rules and are obvlivious about it. Perharps they are damaging the property on purpose so that other students would not be able to use them.
What might the girl be thinking?
The girl seems shocked at the rowdy behaviour of the two boys. I doubt she knows what to do. Maybe she will try to stop the boys from destroying school property further by complaning to the teachers or the school's management so that action can be taken against them.
What do you think will happen next?
These students might then be punished by the school's discipline masters for their inconsiderate behaviour towards the school and other students by damaging school property. The water-coolers will also need replacement and this will in tun, cause the school money. Strict and serious punishments must be enforced against the defient students as a warning. Students will therefore, treat these unthoughtful and inconsiderate acts seriously and refrain from taking such actions.
Section B:
You and your friends are unhappy with the way students are frequently damaging the school property. Below are some comments made by you and your friends.
- Why are school property being damaged?
- Other students are unable to use the damaged property
- Can we have harsher punishment for the commiters?
- Can we have teachers to patrol for these inconsiderate students?
Write a letter to the Principal to tell her your reasons for writing this letter. Inform her of the incidents that had already occured. Explain to her the inconvenience caused as a result. Also, give suggestions as to how the problem can be solved and how you think the school property should be used correctly.
Set your letter out correctly, in accurate English, and use an appropriate tone which will persuade them to improve the current situation.

Complaints on damaged school property
I am Soh Huimin, a student in Chong Boon Secondary School. Recently, my friends and i have noticed an increase in damaged school property, this is extremely inconvenient as we are therefore, unable to use these property.
For example, the water-coolers in our school are often unusable as some students tend to kick them, causing bents. They are thus, not suitable for usage. Students have to walk all the way to the canteen to fill up their water bottles and drink from them which takes up a lot of them and disrupts their lessons.
I suggest that actions be taken quickly. The school's discipline committee can enforce stricter rules to prevent such students from doing these types of actions. The school also needs to spent money to replace these damaged property.
I feel that the school should remind students not to take these kind of things lightly as we are all part of the same school. We should instead, work together to prevent this things from happening again.
In conclusion, i would like to suggest that the necessary actions be taken. Thank You for your kind attention.
Yours sincerly,
Soh Huimin
Student
